Battling Narcotics: Pune Police’s Rs 2 Crore Mephedrone Seizure and Arrests

In a significant operation, the Anti-Narcotics Squad 2 of Pune City Police successfully seized a substantial quantity of Mephedrone (MD), a potent synthetic drug commonly associated with the narcotic trade. The operation resulted in the apprehension of three individuals involved in the illicit drug trade, shedding light on the alarming prevalence of narcotics in the region.

The Seizure:

The Pune Anti-Narcotics Squad 2 confiscated a total of 1 kg, 71 gm, and 53 mg of Mephedrone, a highly addictive and dangerous substance. The street value of this haul is estimated at an astounding Rs 2,14,30,600, highlighting the significant economic impact of the illicit drug trade.

The Arrests:

The operation culminated in the arrest of three individuals who played varying roles in the narcotics distribution network. Among those apprehended were:

  1. Rauf Rahim Shaikh: A 19-year-old resident of Tadiwala Road, Pune. Shaikh was found in possession of the seized narcotics near the Ambedkar statue in front of Sassoon Hospital.
  2. Lalit Anil Patil: A 34-year-old inmate from Yerwada Jail who was admitted to Sassoon Hospital for medical treatment. Patil is believed to be the supplier of the seized drugs.
  3. Canteen Worker from Sassoon Hospital: An individual working at the canteen of Sassoon Hospital, who was allegedly involved in facilitating the distribution of narcotics.

The Operation:

The successful operation was initiated when Police Constable Chetan Gaikwad received vital information about the sale of narcotics near Sassoon Hospital in Pune Station area. Acting promptly on this tip, the Anti-Narcotics Squad 2 set up a strategic trap that led to the apprehension of Rauf Rahim Shaikh, the primary suspect.

Upon further investigation and interrogation, it was revealed that Lalit Anil Patil, an inmate from Yerwada Jail, was orchestrating the drug trade even from within the confines of Sassoon Hospital. Both individuals were arrested, along with the canteen worker from Sassoon Hospital who allegedly played a facilitating role in the drug distribution network.

Legal Action:

The accused individuals have been charged under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This marks a significant step in curbing the narcotics trade in the region.

Leadership and Guidance:

The operation was executed under the guidance and leadership of Pune’s Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik, and other senior officers. Their commitment to combating drug-related crimes has played a crucial role in the successful operation.

The Dedicated Team:

The operation was carried out by a dedicated team led by Police Inspector Sunil Thopte, including officers such as Police Sub-Inspector Shubhangi Narke, Police Sub-Inspector Digambar Chavan, and several diligent police personnel who contributed to the operation’s success.

The seizure of over Rs 2 crore worth of Mephedrone and the subsequent arrests highlight the persistent challenge posed by the narcotics trade. The operation serves as a testament to law enforcement’s unwavering commitment to combat the drug menace and safeguard communities from its detrimental effects.
