Battling Mosquito Menace: PMC’s Vigilance Against Dengue and Chikungunya

Pune Municipal Corporation

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its efforts to combat mosquito-borne diseases in and around Pune, issuing 337 notices to individuals, societies, and commercial establishments within two months. These notices, aimed at addressing mosquito breeding spots, have resulted in fines totaling over Rs 78,600 from January to June this year.

Monsoon Challenges and Public Health Measures

With the onset of the monsoon, there’s a looming concern over waterborne and vector-borne diseases. In response, the public health department has directed all local bodies to implement preventive measures to curb disease outbreaks during the rainy season.

Dengue and Chikungunya Situation

Despite the looming threat, the PMC reports 341 suspected cases of dengue in the last six months, with only 10 confirmed cases. Similarly, nine cases of chikungunya have been reported thus far.

Awareness and Action Against Mosquito Breeding

The PMC, recognizing the breeding potential of clean water, has launched an awareness campaign led by the health office, pest control division, and ward offices. These efforts aim to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding spots to prevent disease outbreaks.

Collaborative Measures for Disease Prevention

In addition to awareness campaigns, the PMC emphasizes collaborative measures for disease prevention:

  • Integrated Insect Management: Cleaning premises, eliminating breeding sites, and spraying insecticides in risk areas.
  • Laboratory Availability: Ensuring diagnostic facilities are available across districts.
  • Adequate Stock of Medicines: Maintaining sufficient medication to address emerging diseases.
  • Quick Response Teams: Establishing teams at various administrative levels for prompt intervention.
  • Establishment of Control Rooms: Setting up control rooms for effective coordination and response.
  • Involvement of ASHA Workers: Engaging ASHA workers in village-level epidemic surveys for enhanced surveillance.
  • Inter-departmental Coordination: Facilitating coordination among different departments for comprehensive disease control.
  • Health Education: Educating the public about epidemic diseases through various media channels.

PMC’s Enforcement Efforts

Dr. Suryakant Devkar, assistant health officer of PMC, assures the public that the dengue situation in the city is under control, with no instances of underreporting. Identified breeding spots, ranging from scrap collections to uncovered water tanks, have been swiftly addressed through the issuance of notices and collection of fines.

Notices Issued and Fines Collected

The PMC’s enforcement efforts are reflected in the notices issued and fines collected:

  • January: 27 notices, Rs 18,100 fines
  • February: 34 notices, Rs 8,000 fines
  • March: 26 notices, Rs 5,400 fines
  • April: 36 notices, Rs 12,800 fines
  • May: 221 notices, Rs 18,000 fines
  • June: 116 notices, Rs 16,300 fines

As the PMC continues its proactive stance against mosquito breeding, concerted efforts from authorities and public participation are essential to ensure a healthier and safer environment for Pune residents amidst the monsoon challenges.
