ATS Opposes Bail Plea of Senior DRDO Scientist Arrested in Espionage Case

DRDO Scientist Pradeep Kurulkar

Pune: The state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has strongly opposed the bail application of Pradeep Kurulkar, a senior scientist at the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), who is currently under arrest in connection with an alleged espionage case. The ATS submitted a written response to the special ATS court on Friday, asserting its stance against granting bail to Kurulkar.

The bail plea hearing is scheduled for August 29 and will be presided over by Special Judge V.R. Kachare. Despite the court session, Kurulkar, who is currently held in judicial custody at the Yerawada Central Prison, was not physically brought to the court for the proceedings. The ATS’s written submission, presented through Special Public Prosecutor Vijay Fargade, emphasized that Kurulkar holds a high-ranking position and stands accused of sharing sensitive information with a Pakistani intelligence operative (PIO).

The prosecution expressed concerns that releasing Kurulkar on bail could potentially lead to tampering with witnesses and communication with the said intelligence operative. Given the nature of the charges and the significance of the information involved, the ATS is adamant about denying bail to the scientist.

Furthermore, the court has also postponed its decision on the ATS’s request to subject Kurulkar to psychological and voice layer tests. This suggests that the legal proceedings and investigations are progressing thoroughly, with the court considering all aspects before making any determinations.
