APMC Cracks Down on Fraudulent Sale of Konkan Alphonso Mangoes

The Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) has intensified efforts to combat the rampant sale of counterfeit Konkan Alphonso mangoes in Market Yard, Pune. In response to recurring incidents of traders passing off inferior quality mangoes from South India as premium Alphonso mangoes from the Konkan region, APMC officials have initiated stringent measures to safeguard consumer interests and preserve the integrity of the renowned mango variety.

Over the past few years, APMC authorities have uncovered instances of deception perpetrated by unscrupulous traders, with at least three cases involving the seizure of fake Alphonso mangoes masquerading as authentic produce from Devgad or Ratnagiri. The perpetrators, attempting to exploit the popularity and high market value of Konkan Alphonso mangoes, faced punitive action including fines and seizure of the fraudulent merchandise.

Dilip Kalbhor, chairman of APMC, emphasized the distinctive characteristics that differentiate genuine Alphonso mangoes from their counterparts originating in South India. Drawing attention to variations in taste, color, and size, Kalbhor underscored the importance of upholding the authenticity of Konkan Alphonso mangoes, which command significantly higher prices compared to other varieties.

In a bid to thwart deceptive practices, APMC has deployed surveillance squads to monitor the influx of mangoes into Market Yard meticulously. Traders and vendors operating within the market premises are subject to strict scrutiny, with stringent penalties awaiting those found guilty of selling counterfeit mangoes. APMC officials have issued stern warnings, cautioning against the misrepresentation of mangoes’ origin or quality, and have pledged to pursue legal action, including lodging FIRs against offenders.

The crackdown on fraudulent mango sales underscores APMC’s commitment to consumer protection and ethical trading practices. Through proactive measures and public awareness campaigns, APMC aims to instill confidence among consumers and ensure transparency in the marketplace, thereby preserving the reputation of Konkan Alphonso mangoes as a symbol of quality and authenticity.
