Anti-Drink and Drive Efforts in Pune Lead to Hundreds of Penalties

865 Intoxicated Drivers Penalized Since May 21, 2024

In response to a tragic accident in Kalyani Nagar, Pune’s traffic police have intensified their anti-drink and drive campaign, penalizing 865 intoxicated drivers over the past month. This crackdown aims to curb the rising incidents of drunken driving, which have led to numerous fatalities annually.

Increased Enforcement on Weekends

The city’s traffic police have implemented stringent measures every Friday and Saturday, blocking major routes leading to bars and pubs. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Rohidas Pawar, these efforts have resulted in substantial penalties for 865 drivers since May 21, 2024.

Breakdown of Enforcement by Traffic Departments

The crackdown has been most effective in certain areas. The Mundhwa traffic department reported the highest number of penalized drivers, with 80 cases. This was followed by:

  • Chaturshrungi: 76 cases
  • Yerawada: 68 cases
  • Sahakar Nagar: 63 cases
  • Vishrambaug: 59 cases

Conversely, fewer penalties were recorded in other divisions:

  • Lonikand: 1 case
  • Shivajinagar: 5 cases
  • Samarth and Vishrambaug: 9 cases each
  • Loni Kalbhor: 10 cases

Circle-Wise Action

The city’s transport department’s actions are divided into three circles:

  • Circle One: 325 cases
  • Circle Two: 304 cases
  • Circle Three: 233 cases
