In a bold move, the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), a prominent Men’s Rights NGO, has initiated a campaign titled “Woman is a Burden” with the hashtag #1CroreAlimony. The campaign aims to shed light on the perceived imbalance in alimony laws in India, particularly emphasizing the demand for substantial alimony even from well-educated and earning women in matrimonial cases.
Awareness Rally at District Court: Activists from SIFF organized an awareness rally near the District Court in Shivajinagar, addressing the concerns around alimony laws. The campaign received a positive response from litigants, and demands were formally submitted to the Principal Judge at the District Court Pune.
#1CrAlimony Twitter Trend: The campaign extended to social media, with the hashtag #1CrAlimony trending on Twitter. SIFF activists utilized the platform to highlight the lack of limits on alimony amounts in India, sparking a considerable response. Co-founder Anil Murty expressed concerns about the judiciary’s encouragement of this trend, especially in short marriages, where men might face substantial alimony claims.
Activists’ Demands:
- Marriage Responsibilities Recognition: Acknowledge the importance of marriage and the responsibilities of each spouse.
- Alimony Duration-Based Decision: Decide alimony based on the duration of marriage, preventing a lifetime financial burden.
- Upper Limit on Alimony: Reinstate an upper limit on alimony relative to marriage duration.
- Psychological Support in Courts: Appoint visiting psychologists and psychiatrists in every court to address mental health crises.
- Special Commission for Suicides: Establish a special commission to tackle the rising suicides of men due to marital issues.
- Political Party Manifesto Inclusion: Include the issue of men’s suicides in the manifesto of every political party.
SIFF’s Advocacy: Founded in 2005, Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) stands as the largest pan-India men’s rights NGO. The organization advocates for various legal and social reforms related to men’s rights, with the #1CroreAlimony campaign being their latest initiative to address concerns within the realm of matrimonial laws.
