Air Quality Deteriorates: Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Witness Spike in Pollution Levels

In the past two days, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have experienced a notable increase in air pollution levels, with 13 out of 15 monitoring stations reporting a surge. The air quality index (AQI) has now surpassed the moderate level of 100, leading to concerns among residents who are facing foggy conditions, particularly in the mornings, along with eye irritation and breathing difficulties.

Currently, Pashan boasts the cleanest air in the region, while areas like Hadapsar, Kothrud, Shivajinagar, Bhosari, and Thergaon are expected to witness a further deterioration in air quality over the next 24 hours.

Experts attribute the situation to a combination of factors. Clear skies, increased wind flow, and moisture are trapping pollutants in the atmosphere, creating a haze and smog-like condition. Additionally, anti-cyclonic winds from peninsular India are carrying moisture, exacerbating the pollution problem. Concerned residents, such as Bhagyashree Suryavanshi and Narayan Rao from Hadapsar, have voiced their worries about the declining air quality and its potential impact on health. The issue is further exacerbated by open garbage burning in certain areas.

While temperatures are predicted to remain stable in the next 48 hours, there is currently no immediate relief in sight for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad residents. This underscores the urgent need for stricter measures to control air pollution in these cities.
