A Life of Service and Leadership: Major General Jathar’s Enduring Impact

Pune, a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, recently bid farewell to a distinguished military veteran and civic activist, Major General SCN Jathar (retd), who passed away at the age of 91 on Monday night after battling a prolonged illness. Major General Jathar’s legacy goes beyond the battlefield, as he was actively engaged in shaping the civic discourse of Pune, advocating for the betterment of the community.

Major General Jathar’s military career was marked by distinction and a steadfast commitment to his duties. He was commissioned in the Bombay Sappers (Corps of Engineers) and played a pivotal role in the Indian Army.

His remarkable achievements include the command of an infantry brigade in challenging regions such as Kashmir and Rajasthan. Major General Jathar also served as the Staff Officer to Gen. K. V. Krishna Rao’s Expert Committee, which was tasked with the significant reorganization of the Indian Army. His insights and expertise played a critical role in the structural development of the military during a crucial period.

Major General Jathar’s leadership prowess shone brilliantly during the 1971 War when he commanded the 105 Engineer Regiment. Under his guidance, his regiment undertook pivotal tasks, including the clearance of minefields and the construction of underground bunkers and helipads. These efforts proved instrumental in the capture of Nangi Tekri during the intense battle of Poonch, showcasing Major General Jathar’s tactical brilliance.

Upon his retirement from the Indian Army, Major General Jathar embarked on a new chapter of service in the corporate world. He held esteemed positions, serving as the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India, Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC Videsh Limited, and Chairman of SCOPE, the apex body of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Major General Jathar’s expertise extended to corporate consultancy, where he provided invaluable insights to organizations like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. He also held key positions, including President of RPG Petrochem Ltd and Managing Director of Garware Shipping Limited, leaving an indelible mark in the business world.

The passing of Major General SCN Jathar is a profound loss, marking the end of an era for a multifaceted individual whose contributions have left a lasting legacy in both the military and corporate sectors. His unwavering dedication to the nation and remarkable leadership will continue to be celebrated and remembered for generations to come.
