A Gift of Mobility: Rotary Club’s 12 Sports Wheelchairs Boost Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket

In a heartening initiative, the Rotary Club of Pune Central has stepped forward to support the Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket Association by donating 12 sports wheelchairs to the cricket team. Recognizing the need for specialized equipment, the association sought assistance from the Rotary Club to provide suitable sports wheelchairs for their players, who were using regular wheelchairs not conducive to competitive cricket.

Members of the Rotary Club of Pune Central deliberated on the request and unanimously decided to contribute to this unique cause. Twelve members pledged to donate one sports wheelchair each, and these specially designed wheelchairs were procured from a company in Delhi. The donation ceremony took place on Saturday, November 25, 2023, where the Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket Team received the much-needed equipment.

Commodore Ajay Chitnis, President of the Rotary Club of Pune Central, expressed the significance of this project, noting that while the club has previously donated wheelchairs to hospitals for patient use, this marks the first instance of contributing to sportspersons pursuing their passion for cricket despite physical challenges.

Chitnis emphasized that the recipients hail not only from Pune but also from places like Nashik and Baramati. This donation not only benefits the current cricket team but also sends a powerful message to other young individuals facing physical challenges, affirming that they too can actively participate in India’s favorite game – cricket.

Aligned with the Rotary International Theme for the Year – “Create Hope in the World,” this initiative reflects the club’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment. By supporting the Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket Team, the Rotary Club of Pune Central aims to inspire and create opportunities for individuals with physical challenges to pursue their dreams on the cricket field.
