₹200 Crore Boost: Pune City Receives Special Grant for Flood Management, Ex-Mayor Commends State Government

Pune, Maharashtra: In a significant development, Pune city has been granted a special fund of ₹200 crore by the Maharashtra government to address flood management concerns. The fund will be allocated for various projects related to nullahs (drainage channels) and boundary walls aimed at enhancing flood regulation in the city. Former Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol announced this news via ‘X,’ formerly known as Twitter, expressing gratitude to the state government for their swift approval.

The Pune Municipal Corporation faced challenges in utilizing funds for nullah-related projects and boundary walls due to technical reasons. However, with the approval of ₹200 crores under ‘Special provisions for the development of basic infrastructure in municipal corporation area,’ as published in the Government Resolution (GR), the city is poised to address crucial flood management requirements.

According to Mr. Mohol, the allocated grant will primarily focus on constructing protection and boundary walls around the nullahs. The initiative is expected to bring substantial benefits to the Ambil Odha area, ensuring a regulated flow of water during floods and enhancing the overall resilience of the region.

The decision to allocate funds for flood management holds significance, especially in light of the devastating events that unfolded on September 25, 2019. The heavy rainfall during that period led to the destruction of the wall around Ambil Odha, resulting in flash floods in the southern part of Pune. The tragic incident claimed 26 lives and severely impacted numerous households.
