Water Storage in Dams Supplying Water to Pune Declines Compared to Last Year

Pune, 15th July 2023: Insufficient rainfall in the catchment areas of Pune has resulted in a significant reduction in water storage in the dams that supply water to the district. The current water levels in these dams are much lower compared to the storage recorded during the same period last year.

Official data reveals that the water levels in four major dams – Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon, and Temghar – currently stand at 29.55% of their total capacity. In contrast, during the same period last year, the water levels in these dams were at 57.24%. Presently, the four dams collectively hold 8.61 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water, whereas they held 16.68 TMC during the same period last year.

The decrease in water levels has raised concerns among citizens, as prolonged low rainfall in the upcoming days could potentially lead to water shortages and the implementation of water cuts in the district.

Here is the current water storage status in the dams:

  • Khadakwasla: 0.94 TMC (47.70%)
  • Panshet: 3.23 TMC (30.29%)
  • Warasgaon: 3.81 TMC (29.73%)
  • Temghar: 0.63 TMC (17%)

The low water storage in these dams underscores the need for conservation and responsible water usage. Residents are urged to practice water-saving measures and adopt efficient water management practices to ensure the availability of water during this period of reduced storage.

Additionally, it is crucial for the district to receive adequate rainfall in the coming days to replenish the water reservoirs and alleviate the concerns surrounding water scarcity.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and implementing measures to manage water resources effectively. The Pune Municipal Corporation and other concerned bodies are working towards raising awareness about water conservation and encouraging citizens to contribute to water-saving efforts.

As the monsoon season progresses, it is important for residents to stay updated on water-related announcements and adhere to any water-saving guidelines issued by the authorities. By collectively adopting water-saving practices, the community can help mitigate the impact of low water storage and ensure a sustainable water supply for Pune.
