Tax Evasion Consequences: PCMC to Auction Properties of Non-Compliant Owners

In a stern move by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), 109 properties are slated to be auctioned after their owners failed to settle overdue property taxes despite confiscation measures. The Taxation and Tax Collection Department had identified over two thousand properties with outstanding tax arrears, resulting in confiscation and subsequent notices to property owners.

Tax Clearance Progress: Out of the initially identified properties, around 1800 property owners have responded positively to the notices, recognizing the urgency of settling their tax debts. This proactive response led to the collection of approximately 23 crores in the PCMC treasury, providing relief to the municipal body. However, a remaining debt of 4 crores persists as 109 property owners did not comply with the warnings and continued to evade tax payments.

Auctioning Process: The Taxation and Tax Collection Department, faced with non-compliance from the 109 property owners, has proposed the auctioning of these seized properties. The Directorate of Town Planning & Valuation is now tasked with evaluating the current market rates of these properties to determine their value. The auction will encompass residential, non-residential, and industrial properties.

Nilesh Deshmukh, Assistant Commissioner of PCMC, emphasized the necessity of timely tax payments, stating, “Property owners, whose properties have been confiscated, have not deposited tax on time. No response was received from 109 of these property owners. Due to this, these properties will be auctioned. After determining the property valuation, the auction process will be carried out as per the orders of the superiors.”

The auctioning of properties is a measure to ensure that property owners fulfill their tax obligations and contribute to the municipal revenue, allowing for the efficient functioning of public services and infrastructure development.
