Smart City, Smart Governance: Pune’s PCMC Launches GIS Revolution

In a remarkable stride toward efficient governance, Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled an innovative Geographic Information System (GIS) project as part of the Smart City Mission initiated by the Government of India. This pioneering initiative empowers 20 different municipal departments with a state-of-the-art GIS system, propelling Pune into a new era of transparent administration and citizen engagement.

The GIS Revolutionizing Pune’s Governance

The heart of this groundbreaking project lies in its ability to streamline day-to-day operations across various municipal departments. With over 300 data layers at their fingertips, the project provides vital information about municipal facilities, including roads, water tanks, utility poles, footpaths, parks, ward-wise areas, playgrounds, municipal properties, and much more. Officers and employees in each department can access this information according to their respective areas of operation, simplifying data editing and report generation.

A Momentous Inauguration

The official launch of this transformative project took place in the Standing Committee Hall, where Commissioner Shekhar Singh inaugurated the PCMC geoportals designed for the 20 divisions within the Municipal Corporation. The event saw the presence of Additional Commissioners Pradeep Jambhale-Patil and Vijay Khorate, alongside a diverse group of employees and officers who gained insights into the project through a compelling video presentation.

Empowering 20 Municipal Departments

The PCMC Geoportals will be instrumental for a diverse range of municipal departments, including the Building Permission Department, Disaster Management Cell, Education Department, Electricity Department, Environmental Department, Fire Department, Parks Department, Health Department, Land and Life Department, Medical Department, Taxation and Tax Collection Department, Social Development Department, Drainage Department, Sky Sign and License Department, Slum Rehabilitation Authority, Sports Department, Town Planning Department, Veterinary Department, and Water Supply Department.

A Vision for Transparent Administration

Commissioner Shekhar Singh shared his optimism, stating, “The GIS system has been developed in collaboration between the Municipal Corporation and Smart City Ltd., aiming to enhance administrative efficiency within municipal departments and offer online services for our citizens. This groundbreaking project represents the first of its kind in the country, designed to promote transparent administration and citizen engagement, and it’s poised to revolutionize the way we govern.”

This GIS project is not just a technological leap but a significant step towards making governance more transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric in Pune. As the PCMC forges ahead with its innovative approach, the city’s residents can look forward to a brighter future where information and services are readily accessible.
