Securing the Healing Space: Yashwantrao Chavan Hospital Boosts Security Post Doctor Attack

YCM Hospital

In response to a recent attack on two junior resident doctors, Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital has taken swift action to fortify security measures within the facility. The assault, carried out by a patient’s relatives, has prompted the administration to deploy additional security personnel and appeal for police presence round the clock. The incident, which occurred on March 5, has also triggered a demand for procedural changes to expedite investigations and online payments to prevent disputes between doctors and visitors.

Heightened Security Measures at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital

Dr. Rajendra Wabale, the dean of the Post Graduate Institute-Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, revealed that the security at the hospital has been significantly bolstered following the recent attack. Over 160 security staff members are now stationed at the hospital, with an additional 17 security personnel from the Maharashtra State Security Corporation appointed to reinforce emergency and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wards. These areas are identified as high-risk zones where conflicts between visitors and medical staff are more likely to occur.

Response to Doctor Assault Incident

The assault on two junior resident doctors transpired in the emergency ward of the hospital when a patient’s relatives attacked them after a recommendation for a CT scan to assess the severity of the patient’s injuries. The incident led to a strike by approximately 120 resident doctors at the hospital, demanding an overhaul of security protocols.

Formal Complaint and Legal Action

A formal complaint was filed at the Pimpri police station, resulting in the arrest of the father-son duo responsible for the attack. The hospital’s swift response includes not only reinforcing physical security but also engaging with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Administrative Plea for Police Presence

Dr. Wabale informed that the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has formally requested the police commissioner to station armed police personnel at the hospital round the clock. The plea aims to provide continuous security in three shifts, ensuring a constant deterrent against potential threats to both medical professionals and patients.

Proactive Changes to Safeguard Healthcare Providers

In addition to heightened security and police presence, the hospital administration plans to implement procedural changes to expedite investigations and introduce online payment methods. These measures are designed to mitigate disputes between doctors and visitors, fostering a safer and more collaborative healthcare environment.
