Safety First: Pimpri Chinchwad Introduces Speed Limit on Old Pune-Mumbai Highway

The old Pune-Mumbai highway, particularly in the direction of Pimpri Chinchwad city (Chinchwad), is now subject to tighter speed regulations, with the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police and civic administration imposing a speed limit of 40 km per hour. Speed guns have been strategically placed along the 12-km stretch between Dapodi and Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti Chowk) to monitor and penalize overspeeding vehicles.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) holds jurisdiction over this significant route, which efficiently leads commuters out of the city within minutes from Dapodi. With only two signals along this stretch and several underpasses, the highway is a crucial connection between the Mumbai-Bangalore (Dehu Road-Katraj Outlier) Highway and Pune-Nashik Highway.

In response to the rising number of accidents on major city roads, the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police have taken a proactive approach. The enforcement of speed limits on key routes is aimed at reducing accidents caused by speeding vehicles. The old Pune-Mumbai highway, being one of the busiest routes, has witnessed heightened scrutiny.

Speed guns have been installed to enforce the mandatory speed limit of 40 km per hour. The automated system ensures that vehicles exceeding this limit receive fines, with the challan sent directly to the owners’ phones. This technology-driven approach eliminates the need for manual intervention, making the process efficient and foolproof.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Pimpri-Chinchwad), Bapu Bangar, acknowledged concerns regarding potential disruptions to faster travel due to the imposed speed limit. However, he emphasized that the primary goal is to prioritize the safety of citizens. The installation of speed guns on the old Pune-Mumbai highway aligns with a broader initiative to create safer roads and promote responsible driving.
