Rising Jewelry Thefts on Pune’s PMPML Buses Spark Concern Among Commuters

Pune PMPML Bus

A recent spate of jewelry thefts on Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses, primarily targeting female passengers, has left commuters on edge. The frequency of these incidents has raised suspicions of an organized theft ring, with a particular focus on the Navi Sangvi area. The latest case, involving the theft of a gold necklace valued at Rs 45,000, has prompted an ongoing police investigation.

On September 17, a woman was traveling aboard a PMPML bus in Navi Sangvi when thieves successfully pilfered approximately 15 grams of her gold jewelry. She promptly reported the incident to the Sangvi Police Station on September 24, triggering an official law enforcement inquiry into the series of thefts.

Initial findings from the police probe indicate that the bus was heavily crowded when the theft occurred. Exploiting the congested conditions, the culprits swiftly absconded with a 14-gram gold necklace from the victim’s neck, valued at Rs 45,000.

In response to these alarming events, local authorities are urging commuters to exercise heightened vigilance when using public transportation, with a specific emphasis on women being cautious about wearing jewelry that might make them vulnerable to theft.

The Sangvi police force is diligently pursuing leads and conducting comprehensive investigations to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for these thefts. Their determined efforts are aimed at curbing such incidents and ensuring the safety and security of all passengers traveling on PMPML buses.
