Pune’s River Residency Ground Controversy: Leasing for Horse Riding Sparks Community Uproar

The River Residency Ground in Chikhali, Pune, is at the center of a growing controversy. The local administration’s decision to lease this beloved ground to a private organization for horse riding has sparked significant opposition within the community. Commissioner Shekhar Singh’s controversial inauguration of this move has not been well received by local residents.

River Residency Ground: A Symbol of Community Sports

The River Residency Ground holds a unique place in the hearts of local sports enthusiasts and children in the Moshi area. It was the last available space for various societies to promote physical fitness and sports among the younger generation. However, the decision to lease it to a private entity for horse riding came as a shock to the local community, with no prior notice or consultation.

Around 500 to 700 players from various societies and communities frequented this ground daily. It was the venue for numerous significant tournaments throughout the year, offering ample space for sports and recreational activities.

Local Outcry and Concerns

Residents are expressing their dismay over the abrupt decision, viewing it as an attempt to restrict their access to a ground that has traditionally been a hub for sports and leisure. They argue that horse riding, often associated with affluence, is an inappropriate use for a ground that has been vital for local sports and community-building.

To add to the discontent, the private organization leasing the ground has set an access fee of Rs. 8,000 for students interested in horse riding. This pricing is considered exorbitant and beyond the means of many community members.

Despite vocal opposition from local residents, the administration went ahead with the leasing, culminating in its official inauguration by Commissioner Shekhar Singh. This development has ignited anger and frustration among citizens who had long cherished the River Residency Ground as an essential space for community engagement and physical activities.
