Pune Residents Rejoice as Rains End Drought-Like Conditions

After a prolonged dry spell, the much-awaited monsoon rains made a comeback in Pune city and its surrounding districts on Saturday morning, bringing much-needed relief to residents.

In Pimpri Chinchwad, the rainfall recorded by 8:30 in the morning amounted to a significant 83.5 mm, while nearby Lonavla witnessed a downpour of 105 mm. Despite the joy of witnessing the return of rain, Pune residents had to contend with waterlogged streets and pothole-riddled roads, disrupting their daily routines.

The heavy rainfall began in Pune city shortly after midnight on Friday and persisted in many areas until noon on Saturday. The meteorological department attributed this rainfall to localized cloud formation, which resulted in moderate to heavy rains specifically in the Pimpri Chinchwad region. Students and commuters were caught off guard by the overnight and early morning showers.

Although the morning downpour gradually subsided in the afternoon, the skies remained overcast throughout the day. The weather department’s forecast suggests that the city and surrounding districts can expect predominantly cloudy conditions for the next two days, with intermittent spells of moderate to light rain.

The monsoon season appears to be gaining momentum across the state of Maharashtra, including Pune. Currently, a low-pressure system extends from Vidarbha to Karnataka, while cyclonic conditions persist in the North Bay of Bengal, potentially leading to the formation of another low-pressure area.

In anticipation of these weather developments, the Meteorological Department has predicted the likelihood of light to moderate rain in numerous locations over the next 48 hours. Additionally, they foresee the possibility of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thundershowers in regions such as Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha.
