Pune PCMC Conducts Inspections on Over 2.69 Lakh Homes to Combat Mosquito Menace, Collects Rs 8.5 Lakhs in Fines

In an effort to curb the risk of diseases such as dengue and malaria by identifying mosquito breeding sites, the Health Department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has conducted inspections at 2,69,754 houses across the city. During these inspections, mosquito larvae were discovered in 5,459 containers, resulting in the collection of fines amounting to eight and a half lakhs.

The health department initiated an extensive screening campaign that took place from June 1 to August 31. This comprehensive effort included inspections of 992 tire and scrap shops, as well as 1,154 structures, leading to the emptying of 3,530 containers. Notices were issued to 1,211 individuals as a result of these inspections. Subsequently, fines totaling Rs 8,82,500 were imposed on domestic and commercial properties where mosquito breeding sites were detected. The fines were imposed at rates of Rs 1,000 for domestic establishments, Rs 2,000 for commercial establishments, and Rs 10,000 for malls, hospitals, and buildings under construction.

Rapid urbanization in the city has contributed to significant levels of air and water pollution, increasing the risk of epidemic diseases. In recent days, there has been a surge in the number of dengue and chikungunya cases, which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquito breeding sites have been identified not only in residential complexes but also in various locations such as containers, fridge trays, pots, hospitals, construction sites, and government offices. Health Executive Officer Ganesh Deshpande emphasized that notices are being issued to all such locations.

To prevent mosquito breeding, citizens are advised not to store uncovered water. Implementing a “dry day” once a week is also recommended, as dengue mosquitoes thrive in stagnant clean water.

Yashwant Dange, Assistant Commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad Health Department, stressed the importance of citizens taking precautions to prevent water accumulation.
