Pune Monsoon Update: Light to Moderate Rainfall Forecasted for the Coming Week

Pune, 1st July 2023: The city of Pune and its surrounding areas can expect light to moderate rainfall in the coming week, according to Anupam Kashyapi, the head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune. The forecast predicts fairly widespread to widespread coverage of rain over Konkan & Goa and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra over the next five days.

While the majority of the rainfall is expected to be light to moderate, isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur, posing potential risks and challenges to the affected regions.

The weather system responsible for these anticipated conditions is an off-shore trough known as “taat duravarti resha,” located over the Arabian Sea at mean sea level. This trough extends from the coast of Maharashtra to the coast of Kerala. The presence of strong westerly winds in the area has facilitated the transport of abundant moisture from the Arabian Sea, resulting in the formation of the predicted rainfall.

In addition to the off-shore trough, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. Although its initial movement is expected to impact monsoon rain over the southern peninsula, its trajectory suggests that it will subsequently affect the southern parts of Maharashtra in the coming days. This development adds to the overall complexity of the weather situation and raises concerns about potential disruptions in these regions.

For Pune and its surrounding areas, the forecast indicates generally cloudy conditions with occasional overcast skies. Light rain is expected to persist for the next six to seven days, with precipitation levels ranging from 2.5 to 15.5 mm within a 24-hour period. However, it is important to note that a yellow alert/warning has been issued only for isolated areas of the ghat region, highlighting the localized nature of the potential impacts, as mentioned by Kashyapi.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents in the affected areas to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions. It is advised to take precautionary measures, such as being cautious while traveling, staying away from flood-prone areas, and following official guidance, to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

As the situation unfolds, local authorities, along with meteorological agencies, will continue to provide updates and advisories to keep the public informed and prepared for any potential emergencies arising from the anticipated heavy rainfall in Konkan & Goa and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, residents can mitigate the risks associated with the monsoon season and ensure their well-being.
