Pimpri:Pune Maha Metro is set to revolutionise the city’s transportation system with a Comprehensive Mobility Plan as the population of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad continues to grow at an astounding rate. The ambitious plan, set to be completed within the next six months, aims to address the increasing traffic congestion and improve transportation options for the city’s residents.
Shravan Hardikar, the Managing Director of Maha Metro, confirmed that they are considering the construction of a new metro line from Nigdi to Hinjewadi, recognising the need for an efficient transportation system to cope with the increasing urban population. These new metro lines will be developed in areas with high traffic demands.
With Pune’s population steadily increasing by seven lakh people each year, a comprehensive traffic survey has been deemed essential. The survey will focus on main roadways and gather data on the number of vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, buses, trucks, and three-wheelers, that travel on these routes every hour. In this survey, the proportion of pedestrians will also be assessed. This data will be collected using CCTV cameras at specific times to ensure accurate and timely information.
In an effort to improve the city’s transportation network, Maha Metro is also studying the travel patterns of people commuting from Pune to Nashik and Chakan. A detailed project report (DPR) for the ‘Neo Metro’ from Nashik Phata to Chakan and Circular Roads is already in the works, with the aim of providing efficient transit options for these commuters.
Additionally, discussions are underway to encourage workers of industrial companies in Pimpri-Chinchwad to switch from private company buses to the metro system, making transportation more efficient and eco-friendly.
