In a significant move to tackle rising air pollution levels, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled a draft proposal for a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), incorporating stringent measures, including restrictions on petrol-diesel vehicles and increased parking costs at commercial establishments. The primary objective is to enhance air quality in the twin cities.
Electric Vehicles Take Center Stage
A notable feature of the proposal is the inclination towards promoting electric vehicles in areas with exceptionally poor air quality. Diverging from Delhi’s odd-even rule, PCMC aims to allow only electric vehicles during critical air quality phases, emphasizing a sustainable approach to transportation.
Halting Construction and Public Participation
When Pimpri Chinchwad earned the dubious distinction of being one of Maharashtra’s most polluted cities last November, the civic authorities took immediate action by halting construction activities. The GRAP draft proposal, aimed at further curbing pollution, was made accessible on the official civic body website for public scrutiny and feedback from December 5 to December 19.
Public Input Shapes the Final Proposal
A PCMC representative disclosed that they are actively reviewing the public input received during the consultation period. The final proposal, nearly complete, will be presented to the general body for thorough consideration before securing the ultimate approval.
Phased Approach Based on Air Quality
PCMC’s GRAP is intricately divided into four phases, each tailored to the prevailing air quality conditions. In addition to implementing phased measures, the civic body suggests intensifying penalties for individuals violating pollution standards. Proposed penalties include an increase in fines for public spitting and violations at building sites to discourage environmental transgressions.
