Pune, August 24, 2023: In response to the escalating cases of unauthorized tree felling reported in recent days, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken a decisive step by establishing four dedicated squads. This proactive measure aims to curtail the rampant and unauthorized cutting of trees across the city.
The impetus for this initiative arose from a recent incident where a private company had felled eight trees in the Bhosari MIDC area without the necessary authorization. In addition to this, there were instances of unauthorized tree cutting along the pathway leading to the Sant Tukaram Nagar Metro Station. Despite permission being granted only for the removal of obstructing branches, entire trees were being felled.
The prevalence of large-scale tree cutting for various purposes, including construction and advertisements, has been observed in various parts of the city. Even trees under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation have fallen victim to unauthorized felling. In a concerted effort to curb these incidents, the PCMC’s Garden Department has formulated four dedicated squads. These squads will be assigned specific areas under their jurisdiction and will be responsible for monitoring and patrolling these regions.
The primary objective of these squads is to identify instances of unauthorized tree cutting and take immediate legal action against the offenders. Cases will be registered against those found guilty of violating tree preservation regulations. This stringent approach aims to deter unauthorized tree felling and ensure the conservation of the city’s green cover.
By introducing these dedicated squads and implementing stringent legal consequences, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is taking a proactive stance in safeguarding its urban forestry. This initiative underscores the commitment to preserving the environment and promoting sustainable practices within the city.
