PCMC Cracks Down on Unauthorized Hoardings in Pune: Owners Given Ultimatum

In the wake of a recent incident involving an unauthorized hoarding collapse in Moshi, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated stringent measures to curb the proliferation of such structures. Concerns over public safety and property damage have prompted PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh to take decisive action, issuing a two-day ultimatum for the removal of unauthorized hoardings across the jurisdiction.

Rising Concerns and Preceding Incidents: The incident in Moshi follows a distressing pattern of hoarding-related accidents, with a tragic incident in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar claiming 16 lives just days prior. Similarly, a fatal mishap occurred in Kiwale under PCMC’s jurisdiction last year, underscoring the urgent need for preventive measures amidst adverse weather conditions.

PCMC’s Response and Enforcement Strategy: In response to the alarming trend, Commissioner Shekhar Singh convened a meeting to address the issue comprehensively. The directive issued mandates the removal of unauthorized hoardings by May 19th, with stringent repercussions slated for non-compliance starting from the 20th. The deteriorating condition of these structures, exacerbated by inclement weather, poses significant risks necessitating swift action.

Regulatory Framework and Compliance Measures: PCMC emphasizes adherence to Maharashtra State Government regulations governing hoarding installation. The Skysign and License department mandates annual license renewal for hoarding holders, coupled with mandatory structural audits to assess safety standards. Non-compliance with these regulations risks license revocation, with structural audit reports required to be prominently displayed.

Enforcement and Accountability: PCMC’s enforcement efforts extend beyond mere removal, with plans for comprehensive inspections and eviction measures slated to commence post-deadline. Joint Commissioner Chandrakant Indwalkar underscores the seriousness of non-compliance, signaling criminal proceedings against violators. Legal action awaits hoardings exceeding prescribed height limits, underscoring PCMC’s commitment to public safety.

Harnessing Technology for Oversight: PCMC leverages technology-driven solutions to enhance oversight, empowering citizens to report unauthorized hoardings through initiatives like ‘Post a Waste.’ Furthermore, enhancements to the Smart Saarthi application bolster regulatory capabilities, reflecting PCMC’s proactive stance in addressing urban infrastructure challenges.
