Mumbai’s Next Marvel: City Set to Unveil Its Longest Intra-City Underground Road

Mumbai, India – In the wake of the successful inauguration of the Coastal Road tunnel, a significant engineering triumph, Mumbai is gearing up to introduce its longest intra-city underground road. The Coastal Road tunnel, celebrated for being India’s first undersea tunnel, utilized a 12-meter diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) imported from China, setting new construction records but also facing pandemic-induced delays.

The imported TBM, currently in a disassembled state, stands ready for its next mission: constructing a tunnel that will connect Orange Gate on the Freeway to the Marine Drive end of the Coastal Road. Spanning an impressive 9 kilometers, this forthcoming tunnel is poised to claim the title of the longest road within a city in the country.

Much like its predecessor, the Coastal Road tunnel, this ambitious project will adopt a twin-tube construction model, featuring viaducts and incorporating modern safety measures. The use of cutting-edge technology and innovative construction methods is expected to streamline traffic flow and enhance the overall transportation network in Mumbai.

Despite facing setbacks due to the pandemic, the Coastal Road tunnel stands as a testament to Mumbai’s resilience and determination in achieving infrastructural milestones. The upcoming intra-city underground road is yet another chapter in the city’s continuous development, reflecting its commitment to modernizing and improving the lives of its residents.

As Mumbai continues to expand and evolve, this engineering marvel is set to significantly contribute to the city’s connectivity, making commuting more efficient and addressing the growing concerns of traffic congestion. The project is anticipated to become a symbol of progress and a model for future infrastructural developments in urban centers across India.
