Mumbai’s Iconic Lalbaugcha Raja Idol Auctions Gold and Silver Treasures for ₹80 Lakh

The iconic Lalbaugcha Raja idol in Mumbai has once again demonstrated its extraordinary appeal and ability to generate resources for charitable causes. In its annual auction, the temple’s devotees contributed 110 gold and silver items, including a remarkable 100gm gold biscuit, resulting in a substantial total of ₹80,73,333. These funds will be directed toward various charitable initiatives by the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganeshotsav Mandal.

The highlight of the auction was the 100gm gold biscuit, which fetched an impressive ₹6.25 lakh, making it the most valuable item on offer. Several necklaces and bracelets were also sold for over ₹3 lakh each. Additionally, a bike from the company Kick EV found a buyer at ₹1.65 lakh. The auction featured a diverse array of items, including gold Ganesh idols, crowns, and kalash. Furthermore, the cash donations, which include foreign currency, provided by devotees are still being counted by the mandal.

Notably, this isn’t the first time the Lalbaugcha Raja idol has witnessed remarkable generosity from devotees. In 2018, a gold Ganesh idol was auctioned off at a staggering ₹35.75 lakh, underscoring the enduring tradition of charitable contributions associated with this revered deity.

Balasaheb Kamble, the President of the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, highlighted the diverse uses of the funds generated, stating, “We use the money in our dialysis centre, study room, library, computer training room, yoga class, competitive exams counselling centre, medical funds, etc.” These initiatives reflect the Mandal’s commitment to fostering education, healthcare, and overall well-being in the community.

The Lalbaugcha Raja idol holds immense significance and is synonymous with the commencement of Ganeshotsav festivities in Mumbai. This year, the Mandal’s theme was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation. The idol was positioned on a throne reminiscent of Shivaji Maharaj’s, serving as a fitting tribute to the historical milestone. Notably, this was the final decor created by the late Nitin Desai, a renowned art director, for the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal.

Over the years, the Mandal has consistently made a profound impact on the community, not only through its spiritual significance but also through its unwavering commitment to charitable endeavors. In its 75th anniversary year in 2008, the Mandal reached its highest income of ₹11.5 crore, underscoring the enduring legacy of compassion and generosity associated with the Lalbaugcha Raja.
