Commencing this December, residents and tourists alike will have the opportunity to leave behind the jam-packed roads in favor of a swift and eco-friendly journey across the city’s waterways.
Sustainable Travel Made a Reality
Electric water taxis are poised to become a common and efficient means of transportation, shuttling passengers between the iconic Gateway of India and Belapur. These 24-seater electric taxis represent an innovative leap in public transit, offering a rapid commute at speeds of up to 12 nautical miles per hour. The launch of these water taxis not only promises a reduction in travel time but also stands as a symbol of environmental awareness, powered entirely by electricity.
The unique advantages of these electric water taxis include:
- Zero Fuel Dependency: Unlike their diesel counterparts, which guzzle 140 liters of fuel hourly, these electric vessels can operate for up to four hours on a single charge.
- Quick Commutes: Covering the distance between the Gateway of India and Belapur in just an hour, they offer a timely and congestion-free alternative to road transport.
- Capacity and Comfort: With seating for 24 passengers, these taxis provide a comfortable and spacious ride without the hassles of traffic jams.
Pioneering the Water Taxi Services
Infinity Harbour Services, a pioneering private water taxi company, has made a substantial investment of around ₹2.5 crore for each of the four boats to ensure the deployment of these services. Trial runs are currently underway in Goa for the 24-seater taxis and in Kochi for the 6-seater versions. Mumbai’s commuters are on the brink of experiencing a futuristic mode of travel that combines speed, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
Sohel Kazani, Managing Partner of Infinity Harbour Service, has expressed that the primary focus of these electric water taxis will be to serve the route connecting Belapur with the Gateway of India. This route selection is strategic, poised to benefit a large number of commuters while reducing the carbon footprint of daily travel.
The Current State of Water Transit
Even before the electric water taxis grace the waters of Mumbai, the city has witnessed the inception of water transport services earlier this year. This development was marked by the introduction of Nayantara Shipping Pvt Ltd, a service inaugurated by State Port Minister Dada Bhuse. This service offers a significant capacity of 200 passengers and has been embraced as a time and cost-saving mode of transport.

With the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions, Mumbai’s electric water taxis are not just a novelty but a necessary evolution. They are set to offer a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient travel option for the city’s commuters.
