Mumbai Shivers as Mercury Dips: Lowest Temperature of the Season Recorded at 14.8°C

Mumbai woke up to an unusual chill on Tuesday morning as temperatures plummeted to the lowest recorded this season. The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department registered a minimum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius, breaching the 15-degree mark for the first time this winter.

Weather experts attribute this cool spell to the influence of northerly winds, ensuring a delightful week ahead for the city. Sunil Kamble, Director of IMD Mumbai, explained, “Pleasant weather prevails in the city due to the impact of northerly wind components. Minimum temperatures are expected to linger around 17 degrees Celsius in the coming days, with maximum temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius.”

Kamble added, “While there might be a slight increase in temperatures after the initial days, the overall weather is anticipated to remain pleasant.”

The Santacruz observatory’s recorded minimum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below the normal range, contrasts with the Colaba station’s minimum temperature of 19.6 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures hovered around 31 degrees Celsius in the city.

It’s worth noting that Mumbai had experienced its lowest temperature on January 21, dipping below 16.1 degrees Celsius.

Despite the cool weather, the city’s air quality faced a setback, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 130 on Tuesday morning. The Deonar area reported a ‘very poor’ air quality level at 335. However, some pockets showcased better air quality, with Borivali East (71), Colaba (80), Vile Parle (81), and Powai (88) exhibiting double-digit AQI values.
