The breach, labeled as a “massive security lapse,” has prompted investigations and calls for immediate corrective measures to fortify airport security.
The Breach Unfolds: A Breakdown in Security Measures
The breach occurred after midnight when a male passenger, reported to have “unsound” mental health, entered the passenger building by closely following another traveler. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), responsible for airport security, had opened additional entry points during peak hours, leading to manual verification of tickets and identity documents.
Despite the presence of automatic e-gates, the intruder successfully passed through multiple checkpoints, including immigration, by tailing other passengers closely. Even the alarm functionality at the e-gates, designed to trigger in case more than one passenger passes, failed to activate.
Immediate Actions Taken: Official Suspended, FIR Filed
In response to the security breach, a CISF official has been suspended, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the trespasser. The incident has prompted the Ministry of Home Affairs to term it a significant security lapse, urging a comprehensive review of security protocols at Mumbai Airport.
