Byculla’s Veer Mata Jijabai Zoo welcomes three Humboldt penguins

In a momentous celebration marking the 161st anniversary of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoological Museum, Byculla’s Veer Mata Jijabai Zoo unveiled three adorable Humboldt penguins. The festivities included the official naming ceremony, introducing Coco, Stella, and Jerry to the public.

Meet the Penguins: Coco, Stella, and Jerry

Coco, a delightful female penguin, made her debut into the world on April 27, 2023, to proud parents Moult and Flipper. Stella, another female penguin, was born on May 23, 2023, to parents Poppy and Olive. Completing the trio, Jerry, a charming male penguin, entered the scene on June 27, 2023, with Donald and Daisy as his doting parents.

These introductions were part of a grand celebration that encompassed more than just the penguin unveiling. The occasion also marked the inauguration of an exhibition at the Botanical Garden and Zoological Museum. This exhibition showcased a diverse array of flora, fauna, and various species of desert shrubs, offering visitors a captivating experience.

Contributions for Visitor Convenience

Project Mumbai played a significant role in enhancing visitor convenience by donating and installing 15 plastic benches within the zoo premises. This thoughtful addition aims to provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for visitors to enjoy the diverse exhibits.

In a commendable effort to improve accessibility, five wheelchairs were delivered to the Manrao Charitable Trust. This initiative ensures that all tourists, regardless of mobility challenges, can fully enjoy the wonders of the Veermata Jijabai Zoo.

Acknowledging Outstanding Contributions

The celebration also took the opportunity to recognize the exceptional efforts of gardeners involved in The Mumbai Zoological Museum’s fertilizer project. Their dedication and hard work contribute significantly to the maintenance and growth of the zoo’s green spaces.

As part of the event, the Mumbai Zoological Museum unveiled a promotional video for “Sylvan Forest,” a new series that explores the rich plant and animal life found in six out of the seven volumes of the world.
