In the Air: AAI’s Intervention for Smoother Operations at Mumbai Airport

n the wake of increasing air traffic and congestion at Mumbai Airport, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has taken decisive steps to address the issue and enhance overall airspace safety and efficiency.

The surge in air travel post-pandemic has led to a significant rise in air traffic, causing congestion on runways and airspace at Mumbai Airport, one of the busiest in the country. The consequences of this congestion include extended circling times for flights, ranging from 40 to 60 minutes, leading to substantial fuel wastage and additional costs for airlines, eventually borne by consumers.

An analysis conducted by AAI identified several factors contributing to the persistent congestion. Excessive slot distribution with limited time margins, non-adherence to slots by airlines, and non-scheduled operations during peak hours were identified as key issues. The Airport Operator, responsible for both slot provision and management, was expected to proactively regulate air traffic movements to alleviate the problem. However, with no such actions taken, the Ministry of Civil Aviation intervened.

On January 2, 2024, AAI issued directives to the airport operator through Notice to Air Men (NOTAMs), restricting air traffic movements during the 6 hours of High-Intensity Runway Operations (HIRO) and non-HIRO periods. The restrictions aim to reduce air traffic from 46 to 44 movements per hour during HIRO and from 44 to 42 movements per hour during non-HIRO periods. General aviation aircraft operations during the HIRO period were also subjected to restrictions.

The move is seen as essential for airspace safety, operational efficiency, and passenger satisfaction. It is anticipated that the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) will promptly collaborate with airlines to ensure compliance with the prescribed restrictions. The government emphasizes the need to strike a balance between the interests of airport operators and airlines while ensuring a positive and fulfilling experience for passengers flying from Mumbai Airport.
