Electric Odyssey: BEST’s State-of-the-Art E-Buses Elevate Mumbai’s Public Transport to New Heights

In a groundbreaking move, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has rolled out state-of-the-art double decker AC e-buses, transforming the landscape of public transport in Mumbai. With a focus on environmental sustainability, economic efficiency, and commuter comfort, these electric-powered buses are set to redefine daily commutes, particularly in the bustling financial districts.

Transforming Commute in Mumbai’s Financial Hub: The latest addition to Mumbai’s public transport is the electric-powered, air-conditioned double-decker buses, operating on route number 310 connecting Kurla station (West) to Bandra station (East). This route is crucial for those working in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), a prominent financial district with a daily footfall of 6.5 lakh people.

Key Features of the BEST Double Decker AC E-Buses:

  1. Deployment on Key Routes: Initially serving the 310 route, these buses were previously catered by single-decker non-AC buses.
  2. Fleet Size and Expansion: With 49 buses in the fleet, 10 on route 310, and more operating in the Central Business District (CBD) of South Mumbai on routes 115 and 138.
  3. Efficient and Quick Charging: Boasting rapid charging capability, requiring only 1.5 to 3 hours for a full charge, covering up to 250 km before needing to recharge.
  4. Seating Capacity and Fare: Comfortably seating 65 passengers, each bus has a minimum fare starting at Rs 6 for a 5 km ride.

Economic and Environmental Benefits: BEST’s decision to deploy these buses is not only an upgrade in terms of passenger comfort but also an economic and environmental boon. Each bus costs around Rs 2 crore, adopting a wet lease model at Rs 56 per km, expected to yield profits from day one, with an estimated income of around Rs 75 per km.

Future Prospects:

  1. Complete Delivery by March 2024: All remaining AC double-decker buses are scheduled for delivery by March 2024.
  2. Operation Across 12 Depots: Operating from the 12 depots managed by BEST, enhancing the public transport service in Mumbai.
  3. Focus on Cost Saving: By opting for e-buses through a wet lease, BEST aims to save costs while providing efficient services, especially crucial as the organization is currently running at a loss.

The introduction of BEST double decker AC e-buses is a significant step towards modernizing Mumbai’s public transport system, offering a greener, more efficient, and comfortable commuting experience. This initiative not only supports the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability but also enhances the quality of daily travel for thousands of Mumbaikars.
