Children Lead the Way: Mumbai Police’s ‘No Honking’ Awareness Drive Gains Momentum

In a bid to address the persistent issue of noise pollution and traffic congestion in Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar, the Mumbai Police has initiated a ‘No Honking’ awareness drive, actively involving children from schools and madrasas in the campaign. Launched on December 21, the program aims to create a positive impact on the community, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic rules and reducing noise pollution.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 1, Pravin Mundhe, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the campaign, which includes the display of banners, collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and active participation of students. The focus is not only on discouraging honking but also on promoting general traffic safety measures such as helmet use, eliminating triple-seat riding, and preventing wrong-way driving.

Mundhe emphasized the significance of community awareness, particularly in areas like Bhendi Bazaar, which have been grappling with severe traffic issues for an extended period. The bustling locality, renowned for its vibrant markets and cultural diversity, has witnessed an increasing vehicular congestion, leading to significant traffic snarls.

The involvement of children in the awareness drive is strategic, recognizing the impact young advocates can have on shaping public behavior. The program, scheduled to run for 15 days initially, has garnered widespread support, with plans to extend its duration for a more lasting effect on community behavior.

This initiative follows the success of the ‘No Honking Day’ held in August, where the police collected substantial fines from motorists and bikers violating noise-related regulations. The funds collected during the campaign were indicative of the prevalent issue, with a focus on areas like Chembur and Ghatkopar.

As Mumbai Police strives to make the city’s streets safer and quieter, the active involvement of children in the ‘No Honking’ awareness drive marks a positive step towards fostering a sense of responsibility and adherence to traffic rules among the younger generation.
