BMC’s Ambitious Move: Mega Road Projects Worth Rs 22,000 Crore Set to Transform Mumbai Ahead of Elections

In anticipation of the upcoming October assembly elections, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), under the leadership of Eknath Shinde, is gearing up to launch three substantial road projects collectively valued at Rs 22,000 crore. These initiatives aim to build on the success of the Nariman Point-Worli Coastal Road and address critical infrastructure needs in Mumbai.

Details of the Mega Road Projects:

  1. Dahisar-Mira Road Connector:
    • Substantial progress has been made with the finalization of the contractor.
    • Critical step: Obtaining no-objection certificates from various government departments, including environment, salt pan commissioner, etc.
  2. Versova-Dahisar Connector:
    • Currently undergoing bid scrutiny.
    • Pending administrative approval processes before contracts are awarded.
    • Due to its route through mangroves, the project requires permissions from the environment ministry and other government departments, extending the timeline.
  3. Grant Road-Orange Gate Elevated Road:
    • Tender process initiated for a 5.6-kilometer-long elevated road.
    • Aims to provide signal-free travel from the Eastern Freeway to the western part of the city.

Strategic Focus: Western High-Speed Corridor

These road projects are strategically designed as part of the western high-speed corridor to alleviate traffic congestion on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and the Western Express Highway. The focus is on reducing commuting time and enhancing overall connectivity in the city.

While the Dahisar-Mira Road connector has made significant strides, bureaucratic procedures, including obtaining essential no-objection certificates, remain a priority. The Versova-Dahisar connector, with its bid scrutiny in progress, is expected to undergo administrative approvals post scrutiny.

The BMC’s recent initiation of the tender process for the Grant Road-Orange Gate elevated road reflects a commitment to providing efficient and signal-free travel options, particularly from the Eastern Freeway to the western part of Mumbai.

These ambitious road projects underscore the BMC’s dedication to addressing key infrastructure challenges in Mumbai and creating a significant impact on the city’s transportation landscape ahead of the assembly elections.
