BIS Raids Mira Road Jewellery Shop for Violating Gold Hallmarking Rules

In a swift response to information about the violation of the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office-II, conducted an enforcement raid on Monday (20th February 2024) at M/s. Milan Jewellers in Shanti Nagar, Mira Road. The jeweler was found to be manufacturing, storing, and selling gold jewellery without the required BIS hallmark, utilizing an outdated marking scheme of four marks.

The raid resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of gold jewellery that did not comply with the BIS hallmarking standards. The violation falls under Section 17(1) (a) of the BIS Act 2016, which carries penalties including imprisonment up to two years, a minimum fine of Rs. 2,00,000, or both.

Shri Sanjay Vij, Scientist ‘F’ and Head of BIS Mumbai Branch Office II, stated that actions are underway to initiate legal proceedings against the offence. The case will be presented in a court of law, emphasizing the severity of non-compliance with BIS standards.

The Bureau of Indian Standards encourages consumers to utilize the BIS CARE App, available on both Android and iOS, to access a list of mandatory products that must be BIS certified. Additionally, consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of the ISI Mark on products before making purchases, using the BIS website.

BIS requests citizens to report instances of non-compliance or misuse of the ISI Mark. Complaints can be submitted to the Head, MUBO-II, Western Regional Office, BIS, or via email at [email protected]. The confidentiality of the informant’s identity will be maintained.
