In a span of less than a month, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai police have collectively fined 1,612 individuals for stopping on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) to take selfies, following Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration. Despite efforts to curb such activities, the police are determined to enforce fines regularly to prevent accidents caused by vehicles halting on the 21.8 km sea bridge.
A total fine of INR 12.11 lakh has been imposed, with Navi Mumbai police penalizing 1,387 individuals and Mumbai police fining 225 people. Both police forces have collectively collected INR 1.12 lakh, contributing to the overall fines of INR 10.99 lakh.
While there has been a decrease in the number of people stopping on the sea bridge, the police remain vigilant in their efforts to maintain safety and prevent any unfortunate incidents. The Navi Mumbai police, responsible for monitoring the Navi Mumbai side, face challenges covering the entire 22-kilometer span.
Police inspector Gulfaroj Mujawar of the Nhava Sheva traffic section commented, “We had mentioned the issue to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), but having a turn at the end of Navi Mumbai jurisdiction could be dangerous for the motorists. The people who make policy decisions would ultimately decide what to do.”
