75 Years, 334 Nautical Miles: Naval Academy’s Bold Sailing Expedition Unfurls

In celebration of its 75 Glorious Years, the Naval Academy has set sail on an ambitious Ocean Sailing expedition from Goa to Kochi and back. The expedition, which commenced in the early hours of December 6, features a determined crew of nine cadets and three officers, tasked with navigating the open ocean over a challenging 334 nautical miles on each leg of the journey. The naval odyssey unfolds aboard Indian Naval Sailing Vessels Mhadei, Bulbul, and Neelkant.

Preparation for this daring adventure involved comprehensive training for the crew. Beginning with basic sailing training in Kochi, they advanced their skills during intensive training sessions in Goa. Proficiency in critical areas such as sail setup, navigation, first aid, and other essential skills were emphasized to ensure the crew’s readiness for the challenging expedition.

The first leg of the voyage from Goa to Kochi has been successfully flagged off, with the crew anticipating its culmination on December 10 in Kochi. The second leg of the expedition is scheduled to depart from Kochi harbor on December 12, concluding its journey back to Goa on December 16, 2023.

Ocean sailing is recognized as one of the most demanding sports, testing participants both mentally and physically. The academy’s initiative aims to instill a spirit of adventure, enhance risk-taking abilities, and foster the development of resilience, teamwork, and a passion for continuous learning among the cadets.

As a significant milestone approaches, with the National Defence Academy (NDA) completing 75 glorious years in service to the nation on January 16, 2024, the sailing expedition stands as a fitting tribute to commemorate this momentous occasion in the maritime domain.
