2028 Vision: Mumbai-Kolkata Expressway Connection Takes Shape

India’s Road Network Expansion Paves the Way for Metropolis-to-Metropolis Linkages

India’s relentless push for infrastructural development continues to reshape its transportation landscape, with the road network emerging as a cornerstone of connectivity and economic growth. As the nation gears up to solidify its position as the world’s second-largest road network, transformative projects are underway to bolster intercity connectivity and reduce travel times.

Among these ambitious endeavors, Mumbai and Kolkata stand to benefit significantly from a forthcoming wave of seamless expressway connectivity expected to materialize by 2028. Spearheaded by a constellation of expressway projects, this initiative aims to link the two bustling metropolises with swift and access-controlled thoroughfares.

Key expressways contributing to this monumental connectivity overhaul include the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, the Nagpur-Bhandara-Gondia Expressway, the Raipur-Dhanbad Economic Corridor, and the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway. While certain segments may still be under construction, the envisioned network promises to offer uninterrupted travel for commuters traversing between Mumbai and Kolkata.

Anticipation looms over the proposed extension of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, stretching towards Nagpur-Bhandara-Gondia. This extension holds the potential to slash travel times between Nagpur and Gondia by half, streamlining connectivity and fostering regional development.

While awaiting official confirmation from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the impending completion of several expressway projects in 2024 adds to the momentum of India’s infrastructural surge. Noteworthy among these are the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (Phase 4), the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, and the Ganga Expressway, emblematic of the nation’s commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure and bolstering nationwide connectivity.
