Heritage & Networking: Jail Museum the New Venue for Bengal’s Post-Puja Event

Kolkata, India – In a distinctive and unprecedented move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to host the annual post-Durga Puja gathering for industrialists and celebrities at the historic jail museum in south Kolkata. This remarkable shift from tradition is gaining attention as it marks the prelude to the prestigious Bengal Global Business Summit in 2023.

Each year, Mamata Banerjee hosts a post-Puja gathering for prominent figures from the state at Eco Park in New Town, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. However, for this year’s event, the Chief Minister is exploring the unconventional choice of the jail museum as the venue, according to sources from the state secretariat.

While no official confirmation has been made, the jail museum is emerging as the likely venue for the gathering. This choice is notably significant due to the museum’s rich history, modern facilities, and potential to create a unique atmosphere for the event.

A state government official, familiar with the developments, stated, “The museum building is done up well with an ambience of nostalgia and, at the same time, it has all the facilities for accommodating social gatherings, including a modern cafeteria.”

The annual post-Puja gathering serves as a platform for interaction between industrialists, celebrities, top bureaucrats, police officers, and members of the state cabinet. It is a testament to West Bengal’s commitment to fostering a thriving business environment and strengthening connections between industry leaders and the government.

The event is also of particular significance this year as it is considered the curtain raiser for the Bengal Global Business Summit, scheduled from November 21 to November 23. This summit, organized by the West Bengal government, aims to position the state as an attractive investment destination and is an essential component of the region’s economic development initiatives.

While the choice of the jail museum is unconventional, it reflects a desire to infuse historical significance and a touch of nostalgia into this annual gathering, making it a unique and memorable experience for all attendees.
