Delhi’s Double-Decker Bridge Project Progresses Slowly, Faces Hurdles

Delhi, February 12, 2024 – The ambitious double-decker bridge project announced by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 2021 is now 70% complete, although it faces challenges in meeting its anticipated operational deadline of the end of 2023. With significant funding from the Public Works Department (PWD) and a unique design to accommodate both metro and road traffic, the project holds the promise of transforming the city’s urban transit landscape.

Construction Challenges and Current Status:

The double-decker bridge, connecting Bhajanpura to Yamuna Vihar, is facing delays in its construction timeline, hindering its expected completion last year. The project features Delhi Metro trains on the upper deck and buses, cars, and other vehicles on the lower deck, providing a novel solution to urban congestion.

Over 90 pillars have been erected, with some already supporting girders for both metro rail and road traffic. Despite progress on pillars, flooring, and sidewall installations, the overall pace of construction remains a concern. Two more double-decker viaducts, from Azadpur to Ashok Vihar and Sangam Vihar to Ambedkar Nagar, are also in progress but are moving slowly.

Project Details and Funding:

The DMRC, in collaboration with the PWD, allocated ₹173 crores for the construction of the Bhajanpura to Yamuna Vihar bridge. However, the PWD officials declined to provide additional details on the project’s financial aspects. The construction site is heavily protected with barricades, and measures are in place to reduce dust pollution, including water spraying.

Local Impact and Community Concerns:

The slow progress has led to concerns among local residents about the impact on traffic movement. Encroachments from auto-rickshaws and street vendors have exacerbated the situation. Despite these concerns, the completion of the flyover is anticipated to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the Mahrauli-Badarpur road.

Specifics of the Double-Decker Viaducts:

  1. Sangam Vihar to Ambedkar Nagar (Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor):
    • Length: 2.4 km
    • Note: The longest among the three planned double-decker viaducts.
  2. Azadpur to Rani Jhansi Road (RK Ashram Marg-Janakpuri West Corridor):
    • Length: 2.2 km
  3. Bhajanpura to Yamuna Vihar (Majlis Park-Maujpur Corridor):
    • Length: 1.4 km
    • Features: Includes a four-lane flyover on the lower deck, offering a solution to the area’s traffic congestion.

In Summary:

Despite facing delays, Delhi’s double-decker bridge project remains a crucial venture aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure by facilitating simultaneous metro and road transport. The completion of these projects is eagerly awaited for their potential to transform traffic flow and urban transit in the capital.
