Virtus Unveils 300 MW Wustermark Data Centre Campus Just Outside Berlin

Virtus Data Centres, a leading data centre owner-operator and a part of the ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Group, has revealed an ambitious EUR 3 billion project in Wustermark, Germany. The Virtus Wustermark Data Centre Campus, situated a mere 30 kilometers from Berlin’s iconic Brandenburger Tor, is poised to establish a new benchmark in mega-scale data centre capacity catering to cloud and AI demands across Europe. This announcement marks Virtus’ second foray into expanding its data centre presence near Berlin this year.

Virtus Wustermark Data Centre Campus Location

The Virtus Wustermark Data Centre Campus is strategically situated within the municipality of Wustermark, a mere 12 kilometers from the outskirts of Berlin.

Scale and Capacity

Phase 1 of this ambitious project, encompassing over 350,000 square meters of land, is anticipated to commence operations by 2026. It is envisioned to emerge as one of Germany’s and Europe’s most substantial green data centre campuses. With a staggering capacity of 300 MW of incoming power across two campus locations, this campus is tailor-made to cater to the needs of hyperscale enterprises, government entities, and businesses.

Sustainable Power Generation

Central to the campus’s design philosophy is an unwavering commitment to sustainability and the use of renewable energy sources. The campus is strategically positioned adjacent to a major substation, capitalizing on its electrical coupling with onshore wind farms to bolster its power supply. The ultimate objective is to phase out the reliance on diesel fuel and transition toward embracing cleaner and renewable energy alternatives.

Technology and Innovation

The Virtus Wustermark Data Centre Campus is meticulously designed to address the evolving demands of cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning workloads, as well as the burgeoning requirements of cloud computing. An intriguing facet of this project involves harnessing the waste heat generated by the campus to bolster a district heating distribution network for the local municipality of Wustermark. This initiative promises to bring positive socio-economic and infrastructural benefits to the community.

Sustainability Goals

In line with its overarching sustainability vision, Virtus has initiated a collaborative effort with the grid operator to maximize the utilization of renewable energy sources. The company is resolutely committed to achieving net-zero emissions across all its reportable activities by 2030.

The Virtus Wustermark Data Centre Campus project represents a substantial investment in green data centre infrastructure and cutting-edge technology. It aligns seamlessly with the burgeoning demand for top-tier data centre services within the Berlin Brandenburg region and, by extension, throughout Germany. This initiative underscores Virtus Data Centres’ dedication to fostering sustainable practices while catering to the ever-evolving needs of the digital age.
