Virgin Media O2 Announces 3G Phase-Out in the UK by 2025

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has revealed its strategic plan to phase out 3G services in the United Kingdom, with the process set to commence in 2025. This move is part of VMO2’s ongoing network transformation efforts, aimed at optimizing the customer experience, reducing energy consumption, and advancing sustainability goals.

Embracing Network Transformation

VMO2 intends to gradually retire its 3G services across the UK by the conclusion of 2025, aligning with a collaborative commitment made by the government and the telecommunications industry in December 2021. This joint statement set an industry-wide target to retire 2G and 3G networks by 2033, allowing for the reallocation of spectrum resources to more advanced 4G and 5G services.

Decline in 3G Usage

The decision to phase out 3G is grounded in the significant decline in its usage over recent years. 3G currently accounts for less than 4 percent of total data consumption on the VMO2 network. By reallocating resources from 3G to 4G and 5G, VMO2 aims to enhance data speeds, bolster the reliability of streaming services, and improve the quality of voice calls for its customers.

Customer Support and Communication

VMO2 is committed to providing support for customers who may require assistance during this network transition, particularly those still using older 3G-reliant devices. The company plans to engage with customers proactively, offering clear instructions and support options throughout the process. Collaborations with consumer groups and charitable organizations, such as the Good Things Foundation, will ensure a smooth transition for all customers, including those from vulnerable communities.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

One of the notable benefits of the 3G phase-out is the increased energy efficiency of 4G and 5G networks. While 3G accounts for 11 percent of VMO2’s total energy consumption, 4G and 5G networks, which collectively handle 96 percent of mobile network data traffic, are ten times more energy-efficient. This aligns with VMO2’s sustainability goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

Expanding Network Coverage

VMO2 has been steadily expanding its network coverage, currently providing 99 percent 4G coverage across the UK. The company is also on track to deliver 5G services to more than half of the UK population by the close of 2023. Importantly, the 2G network will continue to be available for calls and texts, in accordance with government targets, even after the 3G phase-out.

By embarking on this strategic transition, Virgin Media O2 aims to offer its customers an enhanced mobile experience, contribute to energy efficiency, and further its commitment to sustainability in the telecommunications sector.
