Telus Boosts Network Infrastructure in Alberta and British Columbia

Telus, a prominent Canadian telecommunications company, has unveiled ambitious plans to bolster its network infrastructure and operations across Alberta and British Columbia. With a focus on expanding coverage, particularly in rural areas, Telus aims to double cell tower numbers and usher in significant improvements over the next five years.

Substantial Investment for Network Enhancement

Telus is poised to invest over CAD 16 billion in Alberta and CAD 17 billion in British Columbia over the next five years to fortify its network infrastructure and operations. This substantial commitment forms part of Telus’s broader strategy to deploy CAD 73 billion nationwide by 2028, aimed at fostering infrastructure development, sustainability, and technological advancement.

Building on Past Investments

Having already invested significantly in Alberta and British Columbia since 2000, Telus has contributed over CAD 60 billion and CAD 63 billion, respectively, to develop network infrastructure, operations, and spectrum. These investments have laid the foundation for the deployment of cutting-edge technologies, including 5G and fibre networks, positioning Telus as a leader in connectivity solutions.

Elevating Network Capabilities

Telus’s investment will drive the evolution of its networks to deliver enhanced speed, intelligence, and environmental sustainability. Leveraging ORAN technology and harnessing the power of AI and advanced analytics, Telus aims to optimize coverage and network performance, setting the stage for transformative changes in healthcare, education, teleworking, and environmental conservation.

Expansion of Cell Tower Coverage

In a bid to extend coverage across key regions, Telus plans to double the number of new cell towers in Alberta and British Columbia in 2024 compared to the previous year. This expansion will include strategic partnerships with Indigenous Services Canada and the CRTC to facilitate coverage extension to rural areas, ensuring connectivity reaches underserved communities like Eden Valley and Highway 20.

Rural Connectivity Focus

Telus is committed to bridging the digital divide by prioritizing rural connectivity initiatives. Over the past decade, Telus has connected over one million homes and businesses in Alberta and 1.9 million in British Columbia with its PureFibre network. Notably, more than 120,000 rural properties in Alberta and 280,000 in British Columbia have benefited from Telus’s efforts to expand fibre connectivity.

Driving Digital Inclusion and Innovation

Telus’s investments in network infrastructure underscore its dedication to fostering digital inclusion and driving innovation across Alberta and British Columbia. By expanding coverage, enhancing network capabilities, and prioritizing rural connectivity, Telus aims to empower communities, facilitate economic growth, and pave the way for a more connected and sustainable future.

Telus’s commitment to investing in network infrastructure reflects its steadfast dedication to delivering unparalleled connectivity solutions and driving positive societal impact across Alberta and British Columbia.
