Tata Motors Leads the Charge in Green Mobility with Hydrogen Tech Advancements

In a resounding commitment to sustainable mobility and green energy, Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile company, has taken a monumental step towards advancing hydrogen propulsion technology. The company recently unveiled two cutting-edge research and development facilities in Pune, aimed at solidifying their mission to offer sustainable mobility solutions. These facilities are set to revolutionize the industry by focusing on the development of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2ICE) and the infrastructure required for the storage and dispensing of hydrogen fuel, catering to Fuel Cell and H2ICE vehicles.

The move underscores Tata Motors’ dedication to achieving carbon neutrality while harnessing the immense potential of hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source.

Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, remarked, “Tata Motors has been at the forefront of the global trend towards sustainable, connected, and safer mobility in India. We firmly believe that hydrogen is the fuel of the future, especially for commercial vehicles. With the launch of this dedicated R&D facility for developing and indigenizing hydrogen propulsion technology, we are ushering in a new era of technological innovation and advancements in green mobility. The ensuing benefits from this entirely new class of powertrains and engines will propel our customers and our nation into the future.”

Mr. Rajendra Petkar, President, and CTO of Tata Motors, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This is a significant moment for us as we establish a facility for the development of hydrogen-based internal combustion engines and the infrastructure for fuel storage and dispensing at our Engineering Research Centre. This development exemplifies Tata Motors’ unwavering commitment and leadership toward achieving net zero emissions and our long-term vision of providing distinct powertrain solutions across various segments. We have been investing in hydrogen technology for many years and remain dedicated to maximizing its potential through research and product development.”

Tata Motors has been steadily progressing toward its goal of achieving net zero emissions and sustainability. At the Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year, the company showcased one of the widest arrays of commercial vehicle concepts, including the flagship Prima tractor, available in two versions: one powered by a Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and the other employing Fuel Cell Technology. They also presented the next-generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell bus. As pioneers in the field of zero-emission technologies, Tata Motors delivered two technologically advanced, safer, and new-generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered buses to the Indian Oil Corporation on September 25, 2023, as part of a tender won in 2021.

Tata Motors is known for its innovative approach to vehicle manufacturing, with a consistent track record of engineering and developing innovative mobility solutions powered by various alternate fuel technologies, including battery-electric, hybrid, CNG, LNG, Hydrogen ICE, and Hydrogen Fuel Cell technologies. The company is poised to continue its leadership role in green technologies and remains committed to leading India’s electrification journey for both cargo and passenger transportation.
