Tata Group’s Ambitious Plans: New iPhone Assembly Plant to Boost Manufacturing in India

In a strategic move to bolster iPhone manufacturing in India, Tata Group is reportedly gearing up to establish one of the country’s largest iPhone assembly plants in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur. The initiative follows Tata Group’s recent acquisition of the production facility from Wistron, one of Apple’s suppliers, indicating a substantial investment in the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities.

According to reports, the proposed facility is anticipated to house approximately 20 assembly lines and provide employment opportunities for 50,000 workers within the next two years. The timeline for the site’s operational readiness is set between 12 to 18 months. This expansion is seen as a pivotal step in Tata Group’s strategy to broaden its iPhone manufacturing footprint after taking over Wistron’s production facility in India.

While neither Tata Group nor Apple has officially announced the plans, industry insiders view this move as aligned with Apple’s broader objective of expanding its manufacturing operations in India. Tata Group, having already acquired an iPhone manufacturing facility in Karnataka from Wistron Corp, became the first Indian conglomerate to produce iPhones and other Apple products within the country.

Over the years, Apple has forged partnerships with manufacturing and assembly partners in various regions, including India, Thailand, and Malaysia, aiming to diversify its production beyond China. The proposed iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu is expected to surpass the scale of Tata’s existing facility, employing over 10,000 individuals.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Apple is on track to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones annually in India, representing a quarter of global iPhone production. This ambitious goal aligns with Apple’s strategic shift to move a portion of its production away from China, diversifying its manufacturing base.
