Tata Group Secures 35-Year Concession for Pune’s 3rd Metro Line

Pune, Maharashtra – In a significant development for Pune’s urban infrastructure, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has granted concessionaire rights to the Tata Group for the construction and operation of the third Metro line. This project includes the creation of a pioneering double-decker flyover, set to ease traffic congestion between Hinjewadi and Shivaji Nagar.

Rahul Mahiwal, the Commissioner of PMRDA, has reassured residents that the ambitious double-decker flyover, a crucial component of the third Metro line, is on schedule for completion by August 15, 2024. The structure, with an estimated cost of Rs 265 Crore, integrates a metro rail on its upper level and ramps below, designed to streamline traffic flow at the confluence of three major roads leading to Ganeshkhind. Four underpasses beneath the flyover will be constructed by the Pune Municipal Corporation.

The flyover’s starting point is strategically located at the intersection of the Shivaji Nagar-Hinjewadi Metro pillars on Savitribai Phule Pune Vidyapeeth Road, branching into Aundh, Pashan, and Baner. Spanning a length of 1.7 kilometers with a width of 23 meters, this elevated structure aims to address the current challenges faced by commuters on this busy route. Rahul Mahiwal emphasized the project’s goal to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance travel efficiency, and provide much-needed relief to commuters.

This ambitious venture operates under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the Tata Group serving as the Concessionaire. In this context, a concessionaire signifies the recipient of the grant for the utilization of land, commercial premises, or trading rights. Tata Group’s responsibilities include design, finance, construction, and eventual transfer of the project. Notably, PMRDA proposes allocating 9.7 hectares of land to Tata Group for commercial development within the PPP framework. As the Concessionaire, Tata Group (TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited) will hold rights for 35 years, pending governmental approval for extensions based on the grants and benefits provided by the PMRDA.
