Swiggy Declares Biryani as the King of Indian Takeout for the Eighth Consecutive Year

In a surprising turn of events, a resident of Mumbai has set a remarkable record by placing food orders worth a staggering Rs 42.3 lakh on the popular online meal delivery service, Swiggy, as unveiled in the company’s annual report titled ‘How India Swiggy’d in 2023,’ released on December 14.

Swiggy’s comprehensive report delves into the dining habits of Indians, highlighting the continued dominance of Biryani as the most ordered dish through the platform. In a country that relishes its diverse cuisine, the sheer magnitude of the Mumbai resident’s order is enough to capture anyone’s attention.

The annual report sheds light on the nation’s love affair with Biryani, revealing that Indians ordered an astounding 2.5 servings of the beloved dish every second throughout the year. Biryani secured its position as Swiggy’s top-charting dish for the eighth consecutive year in 2023.

One standout Biryani enthusiast from Hyderabad demonstrated unparalleled dedication, placing an astonishing 1,633 orders in a single year—equivalent to more than four plates daily on average. While chicken Biryani retained its popularity, the report highlighted a surge in vegetarian preferences, with one vegetarian Biryani ordered for every 5.5 chicken Biryani dishes.

During the high-stakes India vs. Pakistan cricket match, the love for Biryani reached its peak when a family in Chandigarh ordered a whopping 70 plates at once, showcasing the dish’s cultural significance during special events.

The report also showcased other extraordinary orders, such as a resident of Jhansi placing a staggering 269 items in a single day. Meanwhile, a family in Bhubaneshwar opted for a pizza feast, ordering an astounding 207 pizzas—a testament to the country’s fondness for the cheesy delight.

These culinary records are a testament to the rich and varied traditions of India’s gastronomic landscape. Bengaluru, in particular, earned the title of ‘Cake Capital’ with a staggering 8.5 million chocolate cake orders, while on Valentine’s Day, a nationwide total of 271 cakes were ordered, further highlighting the diverse culinary preferences that define the nation.
