Reliance Jio Set to Monetize 5G Through FWA Service: What to Expect

As the annual general meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries, the parent company of Reliance Jio, approaches on August 28, 2023, speculation is rife about potential significant announcements related to Jio. Industry insiders are keeping a close eye on the event, with a strong expectation that Reliance Jio might introduce its 5G FWA (fixed wireless access) service for consumers.

Reliance Jio, a prominent player in the Indian telecommunications landscape, has been rapidly deploying 5G infrastructure across the nation. However, until comprehensive 5G coverage is achieved nationwide, the idea of monetizing 5G services may seem premature. Nevertheless, in regions or circles where substantial 5G infrastructure is already in place, Jio could viably introduce its FWA service. Bharti Airtel, a direct competitor of Jio, has already initiated its 5G FWA service in two circles.

The AGM is traditionally an occasion for Reliance Industries to make major announcements related to Jio, and this year is no exception. Jio has already introduced its 5G FWA product to the market and showcased it at the India Mobile Congress 2023.

Bharti Airtel’s approach to 5G FWA service involves offering it to consumers for a period of six months, requiring a one-time lump-sum payment. This strategy is influenced by the high cost of Consumer Premise Equipment (CPE), which renders offering FWA at a lower cost unfeasible. By having customers pay a one-time fee, Airtel aims to cover the costs associated with providing the service without incurring losses.

In contrast, Reliance Jio has consistently positioned itself as the most affordable private telecom operator in India. As it edges closer to achieving comprehensive 5G coverage across the country, Jio is anticipated to introduce its 5G FWA service before the year concludes. This service could prove especially valuable in areas where traditional fiber internet options are unavailable.

As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, the potential introduction of Jio’s 5G FWA service signifies a strategic move towards monetizing 5G capabilities. This development not only reflects Jio’s innovative approach but also highlights the increasing importance of flexible and accessible high-speed internet solutions for consumers across India.
