Pune International Airport’s New Terminal: A Modern Marvel for Travelers – Unveiling Architecture, Facilities, Cost, and Operation

The upcoming integrated terminal building of Pune International Airport is preparing to welcome travelers in the near future. The airport is scheduled to undergo extensive trials and system testing by the end of July. If all goes according to plan, the new terminal building will be fully operational for passengers by September 2023. Let’s delve into the architecture, facilities, and other important details of this exciting development.

The New Terminal Building of Pune International Airport

The construction of the new integrated terminal building at Pune International Airport came at a cost of ₹475 crore. This modern facility aims to alleviate congestion issues experienced during peak hours. With the implementation of an in-line baggage handling system and 35 check-in counters, passengers will no longer have to endure long queues.

Spanning a built-up area of 750,000 square feet, the new terminal will have the capacity to serve approximately 16 million passengers annually. This is a significant upgrade from the existing terminal building, which has a capacity of 5 million passengers.

The new terminal building has been designed with energy efficiency in mind and has received a four-star GRIHA rating. Additionally, an expansive 36,000 square feet space has been allocated for food and beverage outlets as well as retail establishments, providing a delightful experience for guests.

Trial Runs and Operations Schedule

By the end of July, trial runs will commence at the new terminal building of Pune International Airport. These tests will ensure the smooth functioning of all systems and operations.

Once the trials are successfully completed, the terminal will be ready for travelers and flight operations by the end of September.

Architectural Features and Design Inspiration

The terminal building boasts an impressive 360-meter-long verandah, which serves as a unifying façade. This expansive structure not only provides shelter from the sun and rain but also acts as a magnificent urban fresco. It showcases the rich social, historical, aesthetic, and cultural heritage of Pune and Maharashtra.

The design incorporates beautiful Maratha arches and ornate columns with a regional dark stone finish, reminiscent of the architectural elements found in numerous heritage sites throughout Maharashtra. The forecourt garden design draws inspiration from the iconic Shaniwar Wada Gardens, a renowned monument in Pune.

The upcoming integrated terminal building at Pune International Airport represents a significant milestone in enhancing the travel experience for passengers. With its impressive architecture, improved facilities, and increased capacity, the new terminal is poised to cater to the growing number of travelers visiting Pune. As the trials and system testing conclude, passengers can look forward to a seamless and enjoyable experience when the new terminal becomes fully operational in September 2023.
