Navigating the Impact of AI: Challenges and Opportunities

N. Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has shed light on the inevitable repercussions of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI on the job market. Speaking at TCS’s 29th annual general meeting (AGM), Chandrasekaran acknowledged that while these advancements in technology will undoubtedly boost productivity, they may also lead to job losses in certain sectors undergoing automation.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, Chandrasekaran emphasized the importance of reskilling and preparing employees to adapt to these changes. He stated, “In certain areas, AI and Gen AI will automate stuff that will result in higher productivity and job losses. But in some other cases AI will require a lot more capability and a lot more jobs will be created in certain areas like data management, and so on and so forth…it’s a mixed bag and we have to actively embrace it to reskill people and prepare them to embrace the change.”

Chandrasekaran highlighted that GenAI, an evolution of AI, will have a profound impact on every industry, particularly in enhancing personalization and improving user experiences across sectors such as financial services, healthcare, insurance, and retail.

Furthermore, Chandrasekaran disclosed that the Tata Group is actively engaged in numerous generative AI projects, with at least 100 such projects in the pipeline.

Contrary to earlier sentiments expressed in February, where AI was seen as a catalyst for change in training methodologies rather than a threat to employment, Chandrasekaran’s recent remarks underscore the complexities surrounding the integration of AI into the workforce.

The rapid adoption of AI technologies is evident not only in established companies like TCS but also in startups across India. However, this transformation has not been without its challenges. Instances of retrenchment due to AI-led automation have been observed in various sectors.

For example, Paytm recently announced layoffs, attributing them to the increasing utilization of AI-driven automation to enhance efficiency. Similarly, InMobi’s shift towards an AI-first approach resulted in job losses for a portion of its workforce earlier this year.

As the AI revolution unfolds, it is imperative for organizations to strike a balance between leveraging technological advancements for growth and mitigating the potential impact on employment. Reskilling initiatives and proactive measures to address workforce concerns will be essential in navigating the evolving landscape of work in the age of AI.
